The car manufacturer Opel has overturned its ambitious electric strategy. Instead of only delivering battery-electric cars in Europe from 2028 as announced, combustion models will be available for much longer.
The company justifies the change in strategy with customer demand. If they demand it, the company will continue to rely on its existing "multi-energy" strategy. This means that each model will be offered with different drive systems such as battery, plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid or combustion engine. "This does not have to be limited to 2028 if the demand side demands otherwise," it said in a response to several media reports.
Opel CEO Florian Huettl had given 2023 as the date for the now canceled end of the combustion engine. In the meantime, the multinational parent company Stellantis has lost significant profitability and the plans for a large battery cell plant at the Opel site in Kaiserslautern have been put on hold.
Nevertheless, Opel wants to push ahead with electric drives. There are positive market signals and political measures in Germany, France and the UK, for example. Opel is ready for electrified mobility and is the first German manufacturer with a fully electrified model portfolio on the market.
