As the two California-based companies jointly announced on Monday, AMD will deliver the first chips in the second half of 2026. In total, the large order comprises GPUs with a total output of six gigawatts.
In return, OpenAI, which was recently valued at 500 billion dollars as the most valuable startup of all time, has secured the option to purchase up to 160 million AMD shares if certain "milestones" are reached as part of the agreement. The first of these milestones is the delivery of one gigawatt of GPUs in the coming year.
AMD's share price rose significantly following the announcement. In pre-market electronic trading, the value of the shares shot up by around 30 percent.
Although no exact number of processors can be derived from the gigawatt values, the agreement is likely to include the delivery of several million GPUs. This underlines OpenAI's intention to broaden its semiconductor supply base and not rely solely on the industry giant Nvidia.
