The long-established Zurich-based company Orell Füssli is feeling the effects of generally subdued consumer sentiment. Nevertheless, more books were sold in the past six months than in the same period last year.

Orell Füssli Thalia Ltd - a joint venture in which Orell Füssli holds a half interest - generated total revenues of some CHF 108.4 million. For the Orell Füssli Group this represents a sales contribution of CHF 54.2 million on consolidated sales of CHF 120.1 million, as the company announced on Friday.

Book retailing thus grew by around 6 percent. This corresponds to around half of the growth of the entire Group.

The security printing segment, which also prints Swiss banknotes, also achieved significantly higher sales. In contrast, the Zeiser industrial segment declined slightly due to restrained investment activity.

New publishing house and additional branch

The learning media segment, where Orell Füssli expanded its position in the past six months, is becoming increasingly important. SKV AG, a publishing house specializing in commercial and business education, was added to the portfolio. Several new teaching and learning media are in preparation.

At the same time, the Group is pressing ahead with the expansion of its branch network: a new bookshop is planned for the St. Jakob Park shopping center in Basel.

Due to seasonal business in the book trade and with publishers, book sales are likely to continue to rise in the coming months.
