Parliament wants to quickly introduce compulsory security service. This would require Swiss men to serve either in the military or in civil protection. After the National Council, the Council of States also adopted a corresponding motion on Wednesday.

The small chamber reached its decision by 21 votes to 13 with 3 abstentions. The National Council had made its decision last Thursday by 113 votes to 75 with one abstention. The motion submitted by the two Security Policy Committees (SIK) was opposed by the left wing of the Council, the GLP and the Federal Council.
According to the text of the motion, the national government now has the task of introducing the security service obligation "as quickly as possible". Parliament took up one of two options recently put forward by the Federal Council for discussion on the future of compulsory service.
The aim of the conservative majority is to create civil protection as a new organization. The current civil defense and civilian service are to be merged into this organization.
