Polarization is increasing worldwide. In view of this development, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin called for multilateral dialog and the search for consensus at the four-year conference of the United Nations Trade and Development Organization (Unctad) in Geneva

The challenges are immense, said the Minister for Economic Affairs on Monday in his role as Chairman at the opening of the conference, which takes place every four years. Over 700 million people worldwide suffer from extreme poverty and have to live on less than 2.15 dollars a day. The most vulnerable are most affected by global instability.

Trade conflicts would weaken economic growth, said Parmelin. Energy and commodity prices were rising due to the instability, public funds were becoming scarcer and debts were exploding. Parmelin called for a trade system based on a regulatory framework.

Unctad Secretary General Rebeca Grynspan praised the member states for ensuring that the US tariffs did not lead to a chain reaction.
