On Saturday, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs sent four of the ten remaining employees of the embassy in Tehran back to Switzerland. However, their departure was no longer possible for the time being due to the closure of airspace, as the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs for the Middle East said.
"They will return to the embassy or leave as soon as possible," said Monika Schmutz Kirgöz, head of the Middle East and North Africa Division at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), in an interview with the SonntagsZeitung newspaper published on Sunday.
The four employees were already on the plane. They are currently being accommodated in a hotel near the airport. "Our staff in the affected countries are doing well under the circumstances," said Schmutz Kirgöz.
According to her, six other employees of the Swiss embassy in Iran will remain on site for the time being. "We are of course constantly monitoring the situation," said the head of the FDFA's Middle East division. Five FDFA employees are currently working at the embassy in Israel.
