The enormous success of the Bernina line poses a number of challenges for the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). In the high season, the line reaches its capacity limit. The RhB wants to meet the high demand with reservations and new half-hourly connections.

"The number of passengers per kilometer on the Bernina line has risen by 71 percent in three years," RhB wrote in a press release on Wednesday. At weekends, capacity utilization was over 100 percent.

RhB is taking various measures to meet the constantly increasing demand. For example, optional seat reservations will be introduced on regional trains on the route from the Engadin over the Bernina Pass to the Poschiavo Valley.

The timetable for the Regioexpress between St. Moritz and Tirano in Italy will also be adjusted. In the long term, RhB plans to modernize the infrastructure and purchase new rolling stock. Half-hourly connections are also planned.
