The Friedensbrücke bridge in Weil am Rhein near Basel in southern Baden is only to be made passable to a limited extent. The steel truss bridge dating from 1909 is in a very poor condition. This was the conclusion reached by an engineering firm commissioned by the Freiburg Regional Council, as announced by the latter on Thursday.

It is not necessary to close the bridge at the present time. However, restrictions to reduce the load on the structure are unavoidable, according to the press release. At the request of the regional council, the town of Weil am Rhein will therefore impose a 30 km/h speed limit and a ban on vehicles over 7.5 tons "as soon as possible".
This is to ensure the safe operation of the railroad facilities under the bridge and the main road, writes the regional council. Rail operations will not be affected by the traffic restrictions.
The detour for trucks will be signposted as soon as possible. Public buses, emergency vehicles and refuse collection services are exempt from the ban. The regional council wants to arrange for the securing and planning of the renewal of the "critical structural parts" of the bridge without delay, the statement continues.
The Friedensbrücke bridge leads from the Friedlingen district to Weil am Rhein railroad station. The new bridge for streetcar line 8 runs parallel to it.
