According to its own statements, the USA is not preparing to evacuate its compatriots from Lebanon. When asked about this with regard to American citizens and members of the military who are in the country, Pentagon deputy spokesperson Sabrina Singh answered "no" on Friday.

Previously, the US broadcaster NBC had reported, citing unnamed US sources, that the transfer of an additional US warship to the Mediterranean had to do with preparations for a possible evacuation. Singh confirmed that the "USS Wasp" had been transferred to the region this week and that the US military's Central Command (Eucom) had been informed of this. However, this was a deployment that had already been planned in advance.

Singh explained that she had seen the reports about the alleged evacuation scenarios, but pointed out that ships of this type were not only used for military-assisted departures. "They are in the region to guarantee stability and deter aggression."

Israel has been engaged in daily exchanges of fire with the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shia militia Hezbollah in the border region with Lebanon for months. The intensity of the fighting has recently increased significantly. There are fears that a possible open war between Israel and Lebanon could escalate into a regional conflict.
