Two people accused of attempted murder were found guilty in Neuchâtel on Tuesday. They had attempted to burn a woman alive. The two men have been sentenced to 17 and 14 years in prison.

"This is a crime of unusual strength and cruelty," said Bastien Sandoz, President of the criminal court of Neuchâtel. "The modus operandi is heinous, the victim suffered absolute fear and abominable pain," he added.
The intent to kill was definitely present in both defendants, the judge said. "They were aware that death could be the result if they proceeded in this way. It was a very deliberate, contrived and long-prepared act," he said.
The court imposed a slightly higher sentence for the mastermind than requested by the prosecution: 16.5 years for the attempted murder and eight months for the financial embezzlement, making a total of 17.3 years.
