The situation in Myanmar is deteriorating by the hour. Another quake was reported on Sunday afternoon, according to the Pestalozzi Children's Foundation (SKP). The population in Myanmar is already suffering greatly from armed conflicts, displacement and the consequences of climate change. The infrastructure has been destroyed in many places and access to clean water, electricity, emergency shelters and medical care is limited.

Local staff are currently clarifying the extent of the damage in the affected project schools, the report continued. Communication is difficult due to the destroyed infrastructure. There was no major damage at the partner schools in Thailand despite the strong quakes.

According to the SKP, Myanmar is one of the countries most affected by natural disasters and extreme weather events worldwide. SKP has been carrying out education and development cooperation in Myanmar since 2003. Through environmental education programs, the foundation works with local people to deal with the consequences of climate change.

On Friday, Myanmar was shaken by a catastrophic earthquake. The strongest earth tremor, centered near Myanmar's second largest city Mandalay, reached a magnitude of 7.7 and has since been followed by numerous other aftershocks.

In a report on state television on Sunday morning, the country's military junta estimated that around 1700 people had died and 3400 were injured. Several countries sent rescue workers and relief supplies to the country, which has been plagued by civil war.
