Following the disappearance of a 30-year-old surfer in Western Australia, police are assuming a fatal shark attack. A police statement said that rescue workers had recovered a surfboard covered in "bite marks" from the water.

After the unsuccessful search for the man's body in the state of Western Australia, it was assumed that he had been killed by a shark, a police spokesman said on Tuesday evening.

The man had been surfing on Monday off the remote Wharton Beach about 90 kilometers east of the city of Esperance, which is located on the south coast of Australia. It was initially unclear which species of shark had attacked the surfer.

In February, a 17-year-old girl was killed by a shark while swimming off an eastern Australian island, and in January, a 28-year-old surfer was attacked by a shark in South Australia. In December, a man was killed by a shark off Australia's north coast while fishing off the Great Barrier Reef.
