The Zurich city police have confiscated an e-scooter that can travel at speeds of up to 110 km/h instead of the permitted 20 km/h. A 49-year-old man used it to evade a police check; his escape ended after a collision with a streetcar.

The e-scooter driver, who was obviously speeding, was noticed by a police patrol in Zurich's Kreis 4 district shortly after 8.15 pm on Sunday evening. When the officers tried to stop and check him, he continued on his way and evaded control, as the Zurich city police reported on Wednesday.

The police vehicle followed him with flashing blue lights, but the e-scooter driver continued his journey unperturbed and at high speed through District 4. This ended when he hit a streetcar on a bend and crashed. The 49-year-old Swiss man then tried to flee on foot, but the police were able to arrest him and take him to the police station.

According to a police statement, the speed measurement at the police station revealed that the e-scooter was traveling at a gross speed of 110 km/h instead of the permitted 20 km/h. The driver will be prosecuted. The driver will be reported to the public prosecutor's office.
