According to her, the convoy was attacked by hundreds of demonstrators. Around "500 people turned up and threw stones at him and there are apparently also bullet holes in the president's car", Manzano said.
The South American country's government released a video that is said to be from inside one of the column's vehicles. It shows demonstrators, who have covered themselves with flags, searching for stones and bricks. As the president's car drives past, projectiles hit and damage windows. "Heads down, heads down," a voice can be heard.
According to officials, an investigation has been launched into whether damage to Noboa's armored car was caused by gunfire.
Most recently, there had been protests against the abolition of subsidies for diesel, some of which had turned violent. The government accused drug cartels of being behind the unrest.
