"He is fighting fiercely for his life," explained Uribe's wife María Claudia Tarazona. Uribe was shot several times during an election campaign appearance in Bogotá on Saturday. Two shots hit him in the head, another in the knee.
According to the police, the suspected shooter was a teenager aged around 15. The boy was injured when he was overpowered and is therefore receiving medical treatment. Nothing more was publicly known on Sunday about the motive for the crime.
According to the police, there had been no concrete threats against Uribe, who is not only a prominent critic of the left-wing government of Gustavo Petro but also a staunch opponent of the guerrilla groups and powerful drug cartels in the South American country. The Colombian government has announced that it will use all police, army and secret service resources to solve the crime and apprehend possible masterminds.
100 investigators are working on the case
Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on Sunday that around 100 investigators were working on the case. The authorities had previously offered a reward of the equivalent of more than 600,000 euros for information leading to the investigation of the crime.
The attack caused great shock in Colombia. On Sunday, hundreds of people in the country's major cities lit candles for Uribe and prayed for him.
"Our hearts are broken, Colombia is suffering," said 41-year-old Carolina Gomez, for example, as she lit a candle in front of Uribe's hospital. The people gathered there shouted "Strength for you, Miguel" and "The people are with you". Uribe's wife thanked the Colombians for their support and called on them to pray together that her husband would pull through.
