Following the death of a family of five in Yverdon VD in 2023, the Vaud public prosecutor's office has dropped the case. They found no evidence of third-party involvement. The father had shot his wife, his daughters and himself.

The investigation revealed that the father of the family had had difficulties for months in meeting important financial obligations to several business partners, the public prosecutor's office wrote in a press release on Thursday. It is therefore likely that he felt he was in a hopeless situation and decided to end his life.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the act of March 9, 2023 was premeditated. The father of the family had bought three canisters and filled them with petrol three days earlier. The day before the drama, all five family members were at home.

The next morning, shortly before 6.30 a.m., the 45-year-old father took action. He used a revolver that belonged to him against his 40-year-old wife and his three daughters, aged 5, 9 and 13.

He then spread gasoline in several rooms of the house before lighting the gasoline and turning the gun on himself in the basement of the house.

House burnt out

The house went up in flames. The cause of the fire remains unclear. According to the investigators, the explosion was probably caused by the mixing of petrol vapors with air.

Forensic examinations also revealed no traces of chemical substances in the bodies of the victims.

The incident caused great consternation in Yverdon. A week later, around 600 people took part in a funeral procession in the Vaud town in honor of a mother and her three daughters.
