Following the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, Qatar plans to reopen its embassy in Damascus on Tuesday. The Foreign Ministry in Doha appointed the diplomat Chalifa Abdullah al-Mahmud al-Sharif as head of the embassy on Sunday.

The Gulf emirate had closed its embassy in the Syrian capital in July 2011, a few months after the start of the mass protests against Assad that led to the Syrian civil war. Unlike other Arab countries, Qatar did not resume diplomatic relations with Syria under Assad.

Prior to the announcement of the reopening, Foreign Office spokesman Madsched al-Ansari told the Qatari state news agency that a delegation from Qatar had traveled to Syria and met with representatives of the transitional government. Among other things, they discussed the reopening of the embassy and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Turkey had already reopened its embassy in Damascus, which had been closed since 2012, on Saturday.

A week ago on Sunday, the Islamist militia Hajat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies captured Damascus and toppled Assad.
