The excavators should be recovered in the course of the afternoon, the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway announced in the afternoon. Geologists are currently creating a 3D model of the terrain in order to analyze the dangers and implement safety measures "if possible during the course of the day".
Six replacement buses were running between Täsch and Zermatt until the end of the day. However, longer waiting times are to be expected due to limited capacity. Travelers are advised to postpone their arrival or departure to or from Zermatt if possible, or at least to allow more time.
The train line was already interrupted on Monday morning due to a rockfall shortly before Zermatt. A Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway locomotive was damaged. According to the railroad company, there were no injuries or further damage.
