A winter storm with heavy rain, strong winds and flooding has hit large parts of Southern California. The authorities have issued flash flood and flood warnings for the Los Angeles area and neighboring areas. The weather service urged caution, especially in former fire areas. In regions where fierce wildfires raged last January, there was a risk of landslides and mudslides. Residents in the endangered districts were called upon to leave the danger zones quickly if necessary.

The city of Santa Monica advised people to avoid non-essential travel and not to use flooded roads under any circumstances. Streams and rivers in the most populous state in the USA have burst their banks as a result of the storms, and some roads in the worst-affected regions have been closed.
After wildfires and on bare ground, heavy rain can have dangerous consequences. In the winter of 2018, severe forest fires raged in the Santa Barbara area, followed by heavy rainfall. Mudslides and landslides destroyed hundreds of houses and more than 20 people lost their lives.
Fires raged for weeks
Two major fires, the Palisades fire on the western edge of Los Angeles and the so-called Eaton fire near Pasadena and Altadena, destroyed more than 16,000 buildings at the beginning of the year. At the time, the fire department was deployed on a large scale for weeks to contain the fires. At least 31 people lost their lives.
