Nine months after the devastating storm, the Bavona Valley in Ticino is still showing signs of devastation. Those responsible expect the restoration of the landscape, roads and water pipes to cost around 20 million francs.
This was announced by the mayor of Cevio, Wanda Dadò, and the president of the Valle Bavona Foundation, Lorenzo Dalessi, at a media conference in Locarno on Wednesday.
"This work will take years," said Dadò. Due to the high costs, the municipality is dependent on donations. It is also still hoping for additional funding from the federal government and canton, she added.
Eight houses in the Bavona Valley were destroyed in the storm on June 29, 2024. Water pipes, various walls and the barn of a farm were also damaged. A complete inventory of the destroyed properties has not yet been compiled, explained those responsible.
The road into the valley will be reopened to traffic in the week before Easter. Until now, access was only permitted to homeowners at certain times. A sign will be put up for the tourists expected in Ticino at Easter. This should inform them about the storm and the damage.
More support called for from the federal government
The reconstruction of the landscape and buildings is to be implemented in four phases, explained Dalessi. The population should also be involved in this process. It should be borne in mind that a landscape is always part of the history of a region.
Both the Ticino government and the two municipalities of Cevio and Lavizzara are still calling for greater financial support from the Federal Council. So far, the federal government has pledged an additional credit of CHF 7.5 million in addition to support for the affected agricultural sector and other aid measures. The Ticino government estimates the total reconstruction costs at around 100 million francs.
The storm on the night of June 29, 2024 claimed seven lives in the Maggia and Bavona valleys. One person is still missing.
