Swiss waters no longer offer cooling everywhere. Due to the heat, some lakes are up to 28 degrees. The lakes have thus warmed up to seven degrees more than usual, wrote the weather service Meteonews.

This is an absolute record for the time of year. In the last two weeks or so since mid-June, the lakes have warmed by an average of a good 5 degrees, according to the report.
Based on the average for the years 1983 to 2024, this is 4 to 7 degrees more than usual. The abundance of sunshine really heated up the water surfaces, the weather service Meteonews wrote on Wednesday.
According to the data, the temperature of Lake Lugano was 28 degrees, while Lake Zurich and Lake Zug were 27 degrees. And Lake Geneva had heated up to 26 degrees. The example of Lake Geneva also shows that warmer conditions have rarely prevailed, not only for the beginning of July, but also for the whole year.
Rivers also showed strong deviations from the norm. The Aare near Bern, the Reuss near Lucerne and the Rhine near Laufenburg were warmer than ever before.
In addition to the hot days, there are other reasons for the high water temperatures, such as the low snow cover in the mountains at the beginning of the warm season, wrote Meteonews.
The meltwater inflows were clearly below average and had already been exhausted earlier. This was confirmed by data from reservoirs, such as those in Graubünden.
