According to a statement issued by Swiss Air-Rescue (Rega) on Thursday, the Airbus H145 D3 with a five-blade rotor offers better performance. This also allows the crew to carry additional equipment or specialists on board if necessary, for example during winch missions in high mountains. In addition, the fifth rotor blade reduces vibrations in the cabin.
The crew at the Lausanne base carry out around 800 rescue missions every year, a quarter of which take place at night. These include transfers between hospitals and the transportation of acutely ill people, as well as mountain accident missions.
According to Rega, it is investing over 200 million Swiss francs in modernizing and expanding its helicopter fleet. By creating a standardized fleet, the same type of helicopter is to be used at all Rega helicopter bases in future.
In addition, the manufacturer Airbus Helicopters is developing a navigation and avionics system especially for Rega that will allow instrument flight procedures to be used even in poor visibility in narrow valleys or on challenging terrain.
