At least three people have been killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike in Syria, according to activists. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced early on Thursday that the previous evening's attack took place in the southern outskirts of the capital Damascus. Facilities belonging to an organization with links to the Lebanese Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian militias were hit. Eleven people were injured by shrapnel from Syrian air defense missiles, it said. The information could not initially be independently verified. There was initially no reaction from the Israeli army.

Israel's air force repeatedly bombs targets in neighboring Syria. With these attacks, the Jewish state wants to prevent its arch-enemy Iran and its allied militias from expanding their military influence in the country. Iran is one of Syria's most important allies. Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip almost nine months ago, Israeli attacks, most of which are not officially confirmed by Israel, have increased.
According to state media, at least five people were injured in the city of Nabatea on Wednesday evening in another suspected Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon. Several houses and cars were damaged shortly before midnight. This information could not initially be independently verified either. Israel has been engaging in daily exchanges of fire with the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah in the border region with Lebanon for months. The intensity of the fighting has recently increased significantly. There are growing concerns that the conflict could escalate into war.
Israel wants the Hezbollah militia to withdraw behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border, in accordance with a UN resolution. If necessary, Israel is also prepared to launch a major military operation, warned Israel's Defense Minister Joav Galant. Readiness "for every possible scenario must be discussed", he said during his recent visit to Washington. The USA is Israel's most important ally.
