However, in real terms - after taking inflation into account - there was an increase of 0.8%, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday based on provisional results.
Petrol stations were mainly responsible for the nominal decline, with sales falling by 4.6%. Excluding petrol station sales, overall retail trade remained stable in November.
However, the individual areas of the remaining retail trade also developed very differently. For example, food sales increased by 0.5%, while sales in various non-food areas fell, most noticeably in the "other household appliances, textiles, DIY and furnishings" area (-3.4%). However, information and communication technology products, which are heavily advertised around Black Friday, also suffered a setback (-1.6%).
The FSO's retail sales statistics are based on a random sample of around 3,000 companies. It is a monthly survey, with small companies being asked about their monthly turnover on a quarterly basis.
