The Rhaetian Railway expects passenger traffic to grow by 10 percent in 2024. Revenue will increase from CHF 118 million in 2023 to an expected CHF 130 million this year, as the Graubünden narrow-gauge railroad announced on Thursday.

The railroad was thus able to continue the strong growth of 2023 in passenger transport this year. At CHF 100 million in 2022, revenue was already at pre-coronavirus levels. In 2023, the railroad had already generated 118 million francs and is now expected to reach 130 million francs by the end of the year. This corresponds to growth of 30 percent within two years.

In the press release, the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) expresses some surprise at its own success and speaks of an "unexpected" and unprecedented development. However, this is somewhat clouded by increased "growing pains" and sharply rising costs in a difficult economic and political context.

In particular, Deutsche Bahn points to a high workload for staff and increasing personnel requirements with correspondingly rising personnel costs. The RhB fleet, which has been renewed in recent years, timetable-related adjustments and service improvements would also result in higher rolling stock and infrastructure costs.

In the slipstream of passenger traffic, the Vereina car transport service and RhB's freight traffic have also developed positively in terms of turnover, it was reported. Overall, the RhB Group expects the result for the 2024 financial year to be in line with the previous year. In 2023, it generated a profit of 13 million Swiss francs.
