The road into the Bavona Valley in Ticino will be closed from Wednesday evening, 8 p.m., until further notice due to the increased risk of debris flows. This was announced by the federal warning app Alert Swiss. People in the valley are asked to refrain from traveling.
The closure also affects first responders, according to the Alert Swiss report. Rescue services are therefore not guaranteed.
For Cavergno at the entrance to the Bavona Valley and the entire Sopraceneri, rain warning level 4 (out of 5) applies from Wednesday, 3 p.m., until Friday at midnight. There are warnings of strong and rapid rises in the water levels of rivers and lakes as well as landslides.
The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) is expecting rainfall of between 200 and 260 millimetres, and there may be even higher rainfall locally due to embedded thunderstorms.
Switzerland lies on the front of a low pressure system, the ex-hurricane Erin, as the weather service Meteo News writes on X. With a south-westerly current, increasingly humid and unstable stratified air will reach us in the coming hours.
A lot of precipitation will fall until Friday, mostly in the south, according to the article. Meteo News is forecasting thunderstorms for the Sopraceneri and heavy rainfall for the rest of Ticino. Heavy rainfall is also forecast for parts of Graubünden.
