Five adult passengers have been injured in an accident on a roller coaster in the Vienna Prater. The front carriage of the ride, which dates back to the 1950s, derailed, a spokesperson for the rescue service told the German Press Agency. The Austrian news agency APA had reported earlier.

According to the spokesman, two 63-year-old women had to be taken to hospital. Three people with minor injuries were treated on site at the amusement park.

Accident on the "Zwergerlbahn"

The accident happened on the "Wiener Hochschaubahn". The ride without loops and extreme inclines is particularly popular with younger children. Also known as the "Zwergerlbahn", the track leads through an artificial Alpine landscape decorated with dwarves.

The train was traveling too fast due to an error on the part of the driver, the operator told APA. "As the emergency braking system was not activated, the first carriage derailed," it said. There was no technical cause for the accident.

The Prater with its famous Ferris wheel is one of the most important tourist attractions in the city on the Danube. According to the operator, the "Wiener Hochschaubahn" is the oldest roller coaster in the Austrian capital.
