A dead royal python has been found at a barbecue site in Rheinfelden AG. The non-poisonous constrictor is not found in Europe. It is dependent on warm temperatures. The police are looking for the owner of the snake.
A third party found the large snake on Wednesday morning, the Aargau cantonal police announced on Thursday. A specialist from the cantonal police identified the animal as a "king python".
According to the police, they assume that the constrictor snake either escaped from its terrarium or that the animal was deliberately abandoned.
Due to the low temperatures, the snake was probably severely hypothermic. This led to its death. The police have started an investigation to find the owner of the dead animal.
The king python lives in the tropics of West and Central Africa and feeds on birds and small mammals such as mice and rats. A royal python can grow up to two meters long.
