Singa is the capital of the state of Sennar and is considered a strategically important city in the south of the country.

The journalist collective "Sudan War Monitor" warned that a takeover by the RSF could disrupt agriculture and exacerbate the already severe grain shortage in Sudan. Sudan War Monitor confirmed that RSF fighters had managed to advance into the city of 250,000 inhabitants. The RSF's announcement that it had captured the city caused panic on the ground. Numerous people fled.

The army and the paramilitary group (RSF) have been fighting for power in Sudan since April 2023. The UN Security Council has called for an end to the fighting, but both sides have ignored this. Millions of people are on the run due to the violence. Large parts of the capital Khartoum have been destroyed. According to aid organizations such as the International Rescue Commission (IRC), the country is facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
