Ryanair ground staff on strike in Spain

This morning, employees of Azul Handling, which belongs to Ryanair, went on strike at the country's major airports. Air travelers should find out in good time whether their flight is taking place or will be delayed and get to the airport earlier than usual, as baggage check-in and security checks could be more time-consuming than normal.

Strike could continue

The strike is initially scheduled to last until Sunday and may continue every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the end of the year. The employees are demanding better working conditions and higher wages. From Saturday, the handling company Menzies, which works for several airlines, has also announced strikes at weekends until the end of August.

Flights slightly delayed

The strike at Azul Handling initially had little impact. The airport operator Aena's online displays only showed slight delays for the larger airports, but no flight cancellations.

The situation on Mallorca was also normal so far. One of the reasons for this is that strikes in Spain are subject to a legal obligation to provide a minimum level of service, which is tantamount to a de facto restriction on the right to strike. The trade union UGT also accused the management of Azul Handling of violating the right to strike.
