Despite successes in artificial intelligence (AI), the Chinese internet giant Baidu has suffered a drop in turnover. In the third quarter of the year, sales fell by 7 percent year-on-year to around 31.2 billion yuan (3.5 billion Swiss francs).

This was announced by the company on Tuesday. The operator of China's most important search engine thus overtook analysts' estimates, who had expected sales of 30.9 billion yuan.
In addition, the group recorded a net loss of 11.2 billion yuan (1.26 billion Swiss francs) - in the same period last year, Baidu had made a profit of 7.6 billion.
The AI-related application "achieved healthy growth in the third quarter, cushioning the impact of the weakness of our online marketing business," said Baidu CFO Haijian He. Revenues from AI-related businesses increased by more than 50 percent year-on-year to around ten billion yuan.
The operator of China's most important search engine earns a lot of money from online advertising in particular. The company is therefore heavily dependent on fluctuations in consumer behavior in the country. Baidu has also invested large sums in the race for AI.
