SBB transported more people in 2024 than ever before. Every day, 1.39 million passengers used long-distance and regional trains, as SBB announced on Thursday at its annual media conference.

In 2023, SBB still transported 1.32 million people. SBB is satisfied with the slightly higher annual profit of 275 million francs. SBB Real Estate and SBB Infrastructure Energy also reported profits, according to SBB. SBB Cargo International returned to profit, while SBB Cargo Switzerland posted a high loss of minus CHF 76 million.

Due to the increasing demand, an expansion of rail services is necessary, the statement continued. In the medium term, SBB needs an annual profit of 500 million francs. Thanks to the implementation of savings and efficiency measures, an increase in debt was curbed, according to the press release. The mountain of debt is high and stands at 12.1 billion francs due to investments in rolling stock.

Satisfied travelers

SBB was more punctual last year, particularly in western Switzerland and Ticino, according to the press release. The punctuality of trains from abroad is still unsatisfactory, the Federal Railways wrote.

Despite higher train capacity utilization, passengers were more satisfied than in the previous year. In addition to punctuality, the expansion of the range of season tickets contributed to this, according to SBB. At SBB Cargo Switzerland, on the other hand, customer satisfaction fell. The reasons for this were price increases and poorer production due to many construction sites at night, the partial closure of the Gotthard and staff shortages, it added.
