Specifically, the index fell to minus 20.0 points, after minus 13.4 points in October," the institute announced in Munich. The decline can be attributed to more pessimistic business expectations.
According to Ifo, companies in the German automotive industry rated their business situation better in November than in October. However, their expectations for the coming months are significantly worse - the indicator fell from minus 4.6 points in October to minus 23 points in November.
"These ups and downs in the business climate reflect the very high and increasing economic policy uncertainty in Germany and worldwide," said Ifo industry expert Anita Wölfl, commenting on the figures.
Strong fluctuations since the summer
The business climate has fluctuated strongly since the middle of the year. Prior to this, it had been constantly below minus 30 points for a good six months - i.e. significantly worse than at present. In July and August, it then rose temporarily to just minus 16.1, only to rise and fall alternately since then.
The Federal Motor Transport Authority's new registration figures for November are expected later today. In the months from January to October, 2.5 percent fewer new cars were registered in Germany than in the same period last year.
