Expectations for the Swiss economy improved surprisingly significantly in October. Following a rise in the previous month, the KOF Economic Barometer has recently risen above its medium-term average.

Specifically, the economic barometer compiled by the KOF Institute climbed by 3.3 points to 101.3 points. There had already been signs in September of a recovery from the gloomy mood that Donald Trump's tariff hammer had destroyed.

The estimates for the October figure compiled by the news agency AWP had been significantly lower at 97 to 99 points.

The KOF economists explained that the indicators for the manufacturing industry, financial and insurance service providers and other services in particular show a more favorable outlook. The indicators for consumer demand, on the other hand, have to take a back seat.

Positive prospects for the manufacturing industry

The current business situation in the manufacturing industry (manufacturing and construction) shows a largely positive outlook. In particular, the indicators for pre-production and finished goods inventories increased. However, the indicators for the competitive situation are under pressure.

The sub-sectors of the manufacturing industry showed a mixed development. The outlook was better for the electrical industry, the metal sector and the wood, glass, stone and earth sectors.

In contrast, the outlook for manufacturers of paper and printing products was gloomier. The same applies to chemical and pharmaceutical companies and food and beverage producers.

The KOF Economic Barometer is a so-called leading composite indicator. It is based on a large number of indicators and is intended to show how the Swiss economy is likely to develop in the near future.
