Both quakes struck the southern province of Davao Oriental about ten hours apart on Friday. The first in the morning had a magnitude of 7.4, the second in the evening a magnitude of 6.8. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) had issued tsunami warnings, but then withdrew them. It has also counted more than 800 aftershocks so far.
Severe quake back in September
It was only at the end of September that a magnitude 6.9 quake struck the central province of Cebu, some 515 kilometers away. At least 74 people were killed and around 550 others were injured. There were thousands of aftershocks.
The Philippines lie on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a volcanic belt that surrounds the Pacific Ocean on three sides. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently in the world's most geologically active zone.
