The authority did not initially provide any information on the cause of the crash. A representative of the regional government announced that the public prosecutor's office and the forensic medical service had been instructed to initiate an investigation.
According to the aviation authority, contact with the Piper Navajo aircraft broke off shortly after it took off from Coyhaique, around 1700 kilometers south of the capital Santiago.
Due to the difficult weather conditions in the mountainous region, it was initially unclear when the bodies of the victims could be recovered. According to an army representative, the recovery work could take several days due to an approaching bad weather front with snowfall.
