The teenager shot the conservative senator and opposition politician twice in the head and once in the knee in June before his bodyguards were able to overpower him.

The shooter will not be transferred to an adult prison once he reaches the age of 18, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office told the AFP news agency.

The assassination took place in June during an election campaign appearance in the capital Bogotá. Uribe then spent two months in intensive care and underwent several operations. He succumbed to his injuries on August 11.

Six people, including five adults and the 15-year-old shooter, were arrested in connection with the attack.

The Colombian secret service holds the Segunda Marquetalia, a splinter group of the former Farc guerrillas, responsible for Uribe's assassination. Uribe was a staunch opponent of the guerrilla groups and powerful drug cartels in Colombia.
