There were several accidents on the A12 highway between Rossens and Châtel-St-Denis in the canton of Fribourg on Friday evening. A total of 19 vehicles were involved. Ten people were injured and the highway was closed for several hours.

A total of five separate accidents occurred on Friday evening due to inappropriate speed in wintry road conditions, the Fribourg cantonal police reported on Saturday. The incidents occurred between 5.20 p.m. and 10.20 p.m. on various sections of the A12. In addition to the police, rescue services, the fire department and highway maintenance were also deployed.

The series of accidents began at 5.20 p.m. on the Alpine side at the Bulle junction. Seven drivers lost control of their vehicles there. Three people were injured in this accident. Just ten minutes later, there was another collision on the Jura side at the same junction. Four vehicles were involved. Four people suffered injuries. Their vehicles were impounded for the investigation by order of the public prosecutor's office.

Police car involved in accident

At around 8.50 p.m., a driver crashed into a police car on the slippery road near Bulle. The vehicle was parked on the hard shoulder as a safety measure. A policewoman was slightly injured, but did not have to be taken to hospital. A quarter of an hour later, another driver lost control of his car and collided with the central crash barrier. A following driver crashed in the same place. The first driver was injured.

The last accident occurred at 10.20 p.m. between Châtel-St-Denis and Vaulruz. Four vehicles were involved in this pile-up. A female passenger was slightly injured and taken to hospital for a check-up.

Hours of road closure

Several sections of the A12 had to be closed for the rescue and clean-up work. Traffic was diverted. The closure lasted most of the night.

The situation was reported to have returned to normal by around 4 a.m. on Saturday morning. The police have launched several investigations to clarify the exact circumstances.
