A slow-moving car triggered a serious chain reaction on the main Bern - Zurich highway. Several vehicles collided on the highway in the direction of Zurich because traffic was blocked due to the suspected broken-down vehicle, according to the Aargau cantonal police on Saturday. One of the cars caught fire, which in turn spread to three other vehicles.

The collision occurred in the area of the Neuenhof half-roof. Due to the fire and the heavy smoke, numerous people had to leave their cars and make their way to safety. Four people had to be taken to hospital as a result, according to the police.

The restrictions lasted several hours due to the extensive rescue and clean-up work. After the full closure, it was at least possible to reopen individual lanes at around 9 p.m., the police added.

The cantonal police have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
