Several hundred people demonstrated against the federal government's austerity policy and rearmament on the Bundesplatz in Bern on Saturday. The demonstration, called by the Communist Youth, was authorized.

The focus was on the package of measures with which the federal government intends to save up to three billion francs per year in the coming years.

The rally participants criticized that this "clear-cutting" would weaken areas such as social welfare, culture, education, public transport and the environment. At universities, for example, tuition fees would rise sharply, making education exclusive, emphasized one speaker.

At the same time, Switzerland wants to spend billions on the army and, like other countries, throw itself into armament. The costs of "militarization and the maintenance of the capitalist order" should once again be passed on to the population. The weakest were paying the bill.

Other demands made by those taking part in the rally included the abolition of the debt brake, guarantees for free or at least affordable public transport and more say for the people with regard to public spending.
