Basements and first floors of houses are flooded, cars are swept away, landslides cover roads: Severe storms with heavy rain have caused damage in many places in north-western Greece. According to the Greek weather service, 280 millimetres of rain fell within hours in the region around the city of Ioannina in the north-west of the country - one millimetre of rainfall means one liter of rain per square metre.

Vacation island hit particularly hard

The vacation island of Corfu was among those badly affected. "The village of Karousades, where 2,000 people live, is cut off from the outside world. Even the police station is blocked by tons of mud," the mayor of North Corfu told the newspaper "Kathimerini". They are now hoping for heavy equipment from the mainland to remove the masses of earth. Many of the island's country roads are blocked or destroyed - schools are to remain closed on Monday.

Landslides after forest fires

It is expected to continue raining in the affected region today, but not as heavily. There was a major forest and bush fire in the north of the island of Corfu as recently as 2023. Meteorologists suspect that the flooding is now much worse - because there is no vegetation to hold back mud and stones.
