The "Cuauhtémoc" was a training ship that had been damaged in the accident, the ministry added. Unverified video images on social media showed the sailing ship colliding with the suspension bridge as it passed underneath it and the ship's masts snapping off. According to the New York police, no major damage was found to the bridge itself. They had initially called on people to avoid the area around the bridge.
The ship was due to sail to Iceland
According to the Mexican ambassador to the USA, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, the ship was on its way to Iceland. The embassy is taking care of the crew members, he continued at a press conference in the evening. The families of those affected would be contacted.
New York Mayor Eric Adams was also on site. He thanked the Coast Guard rescuers for their efforts.
