Shipping traffic through the Bosphorus Strait in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul has been temporarily interrupted. The reason is heavy fog, reported the state broadcaster TRT, citing the Turkish Ministry of Transport.

Traffic is at a standstill in both directions. A lot of snow has been falling in Istanbul since midday. According to Turkish Airlines, numerous flights to and from Istanbul Airport will also be canceled due to the weather up to and including Saturday. According to the forecast, it will continue to snow intermittently for the next four days.

The Bosphorus runs through the Turkish metropolis and divides it into an Asian and a European part. It is one of the most important waterways and trade routes in the world. The Bosphorus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Because numerous ships pass through it every day, there is usually a high density of traffic.
