After a shooting incident in Manhattan, the authorities are assuming that there were several victims. The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, spoke on Monday evening (local time) of several injuries caused by gunshots.

According to US media reports, several people were killed. Mayor Adams said that the suspected perpetrator was dead. The motive remained unclear.

The New York police also confirmed the death of the suspect. The lone gunman has been "neutralized", NYPD chief Jessica Tisch wrote on the X platform.

Broadcaster reports four more dead

CNN, citing investigators, spoke of four other fatalities, including a police officer.

The incident took place in a high-rise building that houses offices of the investment company Blackstone and the National Football League, among others. US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on X that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was assisting with the investigation.

Several helicopters from both the police and TV stations circled over the center of Manhattan, where the incident took place, on New York evening. The streets around the skyscraper in midtown Manhattan were lined with emergency vehicles with their blue lights on.

Ongoing debates about gun laws

Firearms are readily available in the USA and are in circulation in large numbers. After acts of violence - for example at schools, supermarkets, nightclubs or public events - there are always heated debates about stricter gun laws. However, no tangible progress has been made to date. Comprehensive reform has failed for years due to resistance from Republicans and the powerful gun lobby.
