Due to bottlenecks in air traffic control, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is planning to reduce air traffic by ten percent at 40 locations from Friday.

This could affect thousands of flights. US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy and the FAA did not say which airports and airlines would be affected when they made the announcement. There was talk of locations with a high volume of traffic.
The background to this is the loss of pay for air traffic controllers as a result of the ongoing government shutdown. The US parliament has not passed a budget, so there is currently a so-called shutdown.
The exact impact on travelers is still unclear. US media have reported that thousands of flights could potentially be affected. According to the FAA, there are an average of 44,000 flights per day in US airspace.
The shutdown has lasted 36 days - longer than ever before in US history. Republicans and Democrats cannot agree on a budget. For air traffic controllers, this reportedly means the second pay cut in a row. According to Transport Minister Duffy, air traffic controllers are now taking on second jobs due to the financial pressure. He appealed to them to come to work despite the shutdowns.
