Significantly more hops harvested in Germany

Due to relatively good weather, Germany's farmers harvested significantly more hops in 2024 than before. According to the Federal Agricultural Information Centre (BZL) in Bonn, the harvest volume increased by around 13 percent to 46,536 tons compared to the previous year.

Compared to 2022, the increase was as much as 35 percent. However, according to an industry expert, the increased supply of hops is not causing the price of beer to fall, as other costs have risen. The fact that people are drinking less and less beer is a problem for hop growers.

Beer usually consists of water, malt, yeast - and hops. The latter is important for the long shelf life of the drink. One hop plant is enough for 400 to 1000 liters of beer. Only one percent of the hop harvest is used for medicines, the rest for beer.
