The Zurich Transport Association (ZVV) transported 655 million passengers last year. That is almost 11 percent more than in the previous year. Accordingly, Zurich's public transport system did well in terms of ticket sales.

Despite inflation and higher energy prices, Zurich's public transport deficit was less severe than budgeted. According to the annual report published on Wednesday, it amounted to CHF 383 million, which is CHF 12 million less than in the previous year.

For the first time since 2020, there were no more pandemic effects, the ZVV noted. The cost recovery ratio was increased to 65.3 percent. 60 percent is the minimum set by politicians, which the ZVV should adhere to.

70 percent of tickets on cell phones

Digitalization continues to make rapid progress at ZVV: around 70% of all tickets are now purchased on cell phones. In 2018, this proportion was only 27%.

In December 2023, ZVV increased ticket prices for the last time, by an average of 3.4 percent. There will now be a "pause" this year. The ZVV is planning to increase prices slightly again, probably in 2025, in line with the motto "moderate but regular", so that the shock for passengers is not so great.
