With the declaration of intent to establish a joint venture, Sika and Sulzer intend to promote plastics recycling in the construction industry, as the two companies jointly announced on Tuesday. Sika's expertise in polymer applications and high-performance construction materials and Sulzer's expertise in chemical recycling processes are to be combined.
The joint venture, in which the two companies will each hold half of the shares, will be based in the Zurich area and is expected to become operational in the second half of 2025. It will be run as an independent company. The joint venture will carry out initial pilot projects in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Sika and Sulzer are jointly developing a system for the collection, processing and reuse of construction plastics using mechanical and chemical processes. The European construction industry alone generates around 2 million tons of plastic waste every year. Their recycling has so far been highly fragmented, technically challenging and often inefficient.
The majority of these construction plastics are therefore disposed of at the end of their life cycle, as existing mechanical recycling processes often only result in low-quality materials that are not suitable for recycling.
