In the forests and natural areas, however, there was still a very high risk of falling trees and branches, according to the city of Sion. For safety reasons, access to the Montorge castle hill, the Domaine des Îles park and the banks of the Borgne will remain closed to the public until midday on Tuesday.
The heavy snowfall caused extensive damage to the trees in Sion. According to the city administration, no one was injured.
More than a hundred firefighters, police officers, employees of the road administration and parks and gardens as well as forestry workers had been working since 6 a.m. to secure the urban area. On Thursday, the emergency services were mainly occupied with pruning damaged trees and removing broken branches.
The city of Sion also announced that the big Easter market can go ahead on Good Friday. However, the traditional egg hunt on Montorge Castle Hill has been canceled.
