The accident occurred on New Year's Day at around 2.30 p.m., as the Valais cantonal police and the public prosecutor's office announced on Tuesday. For initially unexplained reasons, the skier left the marked piste in the "Bendolla" area. He then slid down a steep slope before coming to a halt.

The ski resort's piste patrol and the rescue teams from the Valais cantonal rescue organization were called to the scene in an Air-Glaciers helicopter. Despite their efforts, the 57-year-old Swiss man died at the scene of the accident.

The public prosecutor's office of the canton of Valais launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
